Steelcase Cobi

Conference Chair

Review:

This is not an ergonomic task chair by any of the criteria we generally discuss, but it feels like I am more active while sitting which I believe is healthy.

My usual chair is a Steelcase Leap V1, which is a very good ergonomic task chair. This cobi is not at all what anyone would call ergonomic. I would put it in the same category as Steelcase Sensor, Rally, Uno, Haworth Very (conference) or any other well designed and well made basic meeting chair.

The lack of a full back or a lockable tilt means a sitter has to sit up and engage core muscles to sit and work. The chair is comfortable, but not very supporting. I am not a yoga person or anything like that. I have a Humanscale saddle stool in my office that I cannot use for more than 20 minutes at a time if ever.

How I sit:

Usually I am a good sitter, but sometimes I like to sit with one leg under or sit cross legged, and the position of the arms makes that very easy with this chair.

Recommendation:

I have used it for a month and not felt any urgency to switch back to my leap which is now holding papers next to my desk. In spite of a very positve experience on this chair, I don't think this will be one of my go-to recommendations for most users. My back was sore for a few days while adjusting to this chair and I think unless someone is committed to trying this, that is a hump I am not most people will want to go through. Also, I sit less than most of the people asking me for recommendations about task chairs.

This is a great second chair. For people with the means and the space in your work area, I sometimes recommend you have 2 different task chairs so you can vary your sitting style by day which I believe keeps your posture more flexible.
